TitelMarch 10: Orlando Wetlands and Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive
Rebecca, the guide from Archaeopteryx Birding and Nature Tours that I had earlier, was also available for another day of birding. She showed me the Orlando Wetlands, an area that didn't exist before. The birds are easy to approach from the trails and boardwalks. We even saw cranes. Usually cranes are migratory birds, but the population in Florida doesn't do that. Just like some storks in the Netherlands. In the afternoon we went to Lake Apopka, an area a bit further east. Here too, lots of water, marsh and birds. That area gave me a few new species. In the category "little brown birds" that I wouldn't have found myself. She found them by sound.

TitelMarch 9: Birding in Orlando
One of my favorite birding destinations in Orlando is Gatorland. It’s a very old private park that clearly has two purposes: to display and raise alligators and to be an amusement park. The birds have discovered that a small pond infested with alligators is a super safe place to breed. And they get to snack on the cookies that are given to the alligators. In the spring, there are nests of herons, cormorants, storks and anhinga birds on every tree. And it brings in more customers: the birders.

TitelMarch 8: Searching for special birds with Rebecca
I found a good guide online: Rebecca, who offers tours and day trips with a partner. She has a nice website at Archaeopteryx Birding and Nature Tours.

She showed me around the area south of Orlando, and she was able to find a number of new species for me. She was also very laid back, which is nice for me.

TitelMarch 7: Birdwatching at the hotel
In Orlando, there is water everywhere. It used to be all swampy, but with the arrival of Disney, the entire area has become habitable. And since my last visit, it feels like a lot of hotels have been added. Some pictures of the herons in the ditch next to the hotel where I stayed.
